League

The League screen is accessed from the Create New Game screen. This is where you define the basic layout of the selected league.

After a game is created, league structure can be only be edited further during the preseason or offseason using the League Structure Editor, which can be found under "League Settings/Leagues & Teams" or "Game Settings/Functions."

League Structure Overview

The League Structure Overview section allows you to set a few key variables for the selected league.

Option Description
League Name The long form of the league's name.
League Abbreviation The abbreviated form of the league's name.
League Level Each league must be assigned to one of the following league levels for a league:
  • Major League Level
  • Triple A (AAA)
  • Double A (AA)
  • Class A (A)
  • Short Season A (S A)
  • Rookie League (R)
  • International (INT)
  • Winter League (WL)
  • College (COL)
  • High School (HS)

There is also a "Tournament (TRN)" level, which appears only on the screen for Tournaments and Winter Leagues.

Once you have selected a league level, the abbreviation for the level will be added after the league name in the All Included Leagues box.

League levels are used in the following ways:

  • Minor leagues (AAA, AA, A, S A, R) may be affiliated with Major Leagues or International Leagues. Teams in affiliated leagues may be affiliated with teams in the parent league. Affiliation isn't mandatory. An affiliated league may include unaffiliated teams.
  • All levels except affiliated minor leagues have their own financial functions. Unaffiliated teams in affiliated minor leagues have truncated financial functions.
  • All leagues except major leagues and minor leagues (affiliated or unaffiliated) may be feeder leagues.
  • Players for winter leagues and tournaments may be drawn from other leagues.
  • College Leagues may be designated as “Junior College”, which affects player creation parameters but nothing else.
  • Major, International, Independent, College and High School Leagues may be affiliated (including affiliations with other leagues of that type). They then function like affiliated Minor Leagues, except that only Major Leagues and International Leagues can be created with multiple Minor League levels (AAA, AA, etc.). Another type of league may have multiple levels, but the Minor Leagues must be separately created and then affiliated with the parent league.
Level Name This field is optional. You may change the name that the game uses when referring to this level for this league. You could, for instance, rename "Class A" to “Advanced A” for some Class A level leagues and leave it at "Class A" for others. You could even do something like change the level name of a Major League to "Corporate League".
Level Abbreviation This field is optional. You may change the abbreviation for the level. For instance, after renaming "Class A" to "Advanced A", you might want to insert “A+” as the abbreviation.
League Nation Each league must have a home nation. OOTP comes with a list of every nation in the world today. However, for those who want to create a totally fictional world, the nations used in the game are completely customizable. Nation selection affects the nationality of players and personnel in the league, but has no other impact. For example, creating a U.S. league won't automatically create 'better players' because the level of baseball is higher in the U.S. than in other countries.
Region (optional) A league may optionally have a specified region. Regions are preconfigured areas that may be comprised of states, nations, etc. When a region is selected, then the game will select a proper league nation based on the region. It will also select city names from the region, and generated players will also come from the region. (This could change depending on how you set the foreigner percentage on the Options screen.
League Reputation The league's overall reputation in relation to other leagues in your game world, on a scale from 1-10. Reputation influences the willingness of players and coaches to sign with teams in a particular league. Less importantly, it governs the order in which leagues are listed in dropdown menus and elsewhere. There are several nuances:
  • Major Leagues have higher reputations than any other type. A 1 Major League outranks a 10 International or Independent League.
  • International Leagues have higher reputations that any other type except for Major Leagues. A 1 International League outranks a 10 Independent League, but a 10 International League is outranked by a 1 Major League.
  • For Minor Leagues, each League Level has a higher reputation than the lower levels. A 1 AAA league outranks a 10 AA league. Affiliated Minor Leagues are listed under their parent league and aren’t compared to Minor Leagues with different parents.
  • Leagues of other types are ranked in order of Reputation. A 10 College or High School League outranks a 9 Independent League.

League Reputation can be utilized to create sublevels within League Levels. For example, two sublevels at the Class A level, such as "Advanced A" and "Single A", can be created by assigning higher Reputations to the Advanced A leagues. For example, Here is how to recreate the classification system that existed between 1952 and 1958, when the largest number of Minor League subclasses were extant:

  • AAA League Level: Open Reputation 10, AAA 8
  • AA League Level: AA
  • Class A League Level: Class A 10, Class B 5
  • Short Season A League Level: Class C 10, Class D 5
  • Rookie League Level: Short Season Class D
Parent League This identifies the league that is the parent of the selected league. If the selected league is a parent league, this display reads 'Not Affiliated.' Any league, including a Major League, may have a parent. Leagues with parents are treated like Minor Leagues, whatever their nominal League Level. Obviously, it would be silly for a Major League to have a High School League as its parent, but it can be done if someone really wants to.

See Game Universe Terminology for more information on parent and affiliated leagues.
Edit League Structure This button activates the League Structure Editor, which can add or delete subleagues, divisions and teams. It is available only during the preseason and offseason.
Sub League Name If there is only one subleague, its name should be entered here. If there are two, each should have a distinctive name.
Abbreviation If there is only one subleague, its abbreviation should be entered here. If there are two, each should have a distinctive abbreviation.
Division Name Leave blank if the subleague has only one division.
League Structure Setup

The League Structure Setup section defines the sructure of your league, in terms of subleagues, divisions, and teams.

  • A league can have one or two subleagues. Subleagues also factor into playoffs; the winner of one subleague frequently faces the winner of the other for the league championship.
  • A subleague can have up to 50 divisions.
  • A division can consist of 2-50 teams.

Beneath these options the teams in the league are listed by subleague and division. Shown are Team Name, Team Nickname, Abbreviation, Nation and Affiliation (if the league as a parent): These can all be changed at any time, including in the middle of a season.

See Game Universe Terminology for more information on these different terms. Beneath these options, the teams and divisions of each subleague are displayed.
